  1. 1 - What have you learned in this course that surprised you?
I have learned that I need to ask more questions about the intent of an action. Am I doing the right thing, the right way for the right reason or purpose? What seem like a straight forward situation causes me to think more deeply and I find that I cannot clearly define an action, in other words – I thought it would be easier for me to justify my intent, to say take a pen from work. But then the ethical theories make me ask – would it be okay for everyone to take a pen from work – isn’t that really stealing? Is the ends justified?
2 - Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
I think I would be interested in another philosophy course as it definitely made me think in a deeper and different way and caused me to appreciate different theories.
3 - Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of business?
I think I have a cursory understanding; I understand the theories and how they could be applied in the business world.
4 - Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives?
I have developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives. It has caused me to start listening and reading more to gain an understanding of the theories and how they would be applied in those situations. I found myself using the Golden Rule today with one of my employees – it made me feel better about the situation and the outcome. I listened to her needs, and thought about how I would want to be treated in the same situation.
5 - Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course?
I do believe I have improved in my analysis and critiquing, oral and written communication as a result of the course. The blogging, case studies and interaction with students has been more dynamic in this class. The vast amount of reading and time that was required to absorb the information did provide time for me to extrapolate and apply the skills to analyze and really listen to what is and is not being said.

  2. What have you learned in this course that surprised you? All the different ways things can be weighed and measured to determine what is actually ethical. It is important to be ethical and follow your ethical values. Because of this I have learned that is very important to think through my actions thoroughly before acting because everyone is watching.

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers? I would never take another philosophy class is an accelerated style. There was a lot to learn in a very little time. I believe this class has a lot of value and I am not sure that we were able to comprehend it in its entirety.

Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of business? The short answer is Yes. I think I understand the few theories that we went over and how to apply it in the business world. However, I think the class would have been more beneficial if we could have applied these theories to more real life case studies instead of reading passages.

Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives? I have absolutely developed an appreciation for the relevance of the ethical questions both professionally and personally. I have actually posted the three questions on my wall at work as a friendly reminder.
    • Am I doing the right thing?
    • Am I doing it the right way?
    • Am I doing it for the right reasons?

Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course? I would hope that I have improved my analytic skills both orally and written. What I have learned is that it is all about justifying my opinion with factual information. This allows for deeper conversation and understanding of the situation at hand.

    1. I agree Colette, I would have liked more time and more in class discussion time. I think it is hard to really appreciate the concepts when you are moving as fast as we were. I did enjoy the course over all. Just wish we had more time or more classes to really absorb the information.

  3. What have you learned in this course that surprised you? To be honest there wasn't anything that "surprised me. We took an Ethics course in the Associates program, I taken courses through my work, and I am involved with Ethics a lot in work. I do appreciate your passion for Ethics and Philosophy though.

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
No. I appreciate it, but I am not passionate about it.

Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of business?
Yes, I do have an understanding. I agree with Colette when she said taking this in an accelerated format made everything very fast and rushed (not your fault). I do have to reference things to make sure I am referring to the right thing that I am thinking about.
Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives?
Absolutely. I really do appreciate them. It makes you take a step back and think before responding or acting in some way.

Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course?
Analysis and critique for sure were improved upon by learning the questions to ask myself before making a decision. I'm not sure I improved my written and oral communication? That is something other people could judge.

  4. What have you learned in this course that surprised you? I do not think that anything has really surprised me. I enjoyed learning the basics of the different theories that we studied. I also enjoyed reading the different excerpts from the Honest Work book. Actually, one thing did surprise me. I was looking at Sennett's follow up book to The Culture of the New Capitalism. It is called The Craftsman. I read a few pages of this book and found it to be full of grammatical errors and misspellings. Kind of odd given the point of the book. Not that I am authorized to critique on this matter.

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers? Absolutely. I love it. I read and study different bits of philosophy every day. I like to listen and learn from others.

Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of business? I have a twisted opinion on this matter. Business and ethics do not mix at the upper most levels. Much like Dr. Cate's friend who is studying the effects of power involving high ranking military officers. I feel that ethics in business is much like religion. It is an opiate for the masses.

Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives? Yes, yes, and yes. The most important question is show me the money. Who is financially benefiting from this arrangement or transaction?

Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course? I have learned more about the basics of a few different philosophical theories. It is interesting to look at situations based on these theories. My oral and written communication skills are always in need of work. I hope they get better as I use them more. That being said, ten pages in two hours scares the hell out of me.

  5. Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives?

Yes, I feel we use ethical relevance everyday. This class has broken my way of thinking about the most simplest situation. I believe ethics start at home if you are taught good behavior at home it is instilled in you to do the right thing naturally. If you have to contemplate whether or not about your decision on certain situations like texting and driving when you have seen the terrible outcomes. Why continue to do it? Hopefully people are becoming more aware (ethically) of their actions and the consequences.

    1. What have you learned in this course that surprised you?

I know that every situation is not "black and white" there are many shades of gray. But I did not realize how much emphases goes into making the right decision. You have to literally dissect a situation before making your final judgment. I have to take compliance courses for work on ethic behaviors but nothing to this multitude.

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers? No, Only if it was a requirement for work purposes.

    2. What have you learned in this course that surprised you?
      - I think what surprised me the most was how actively engaged everyone became in the discussions.

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
-Yes. I like philosophy because it makes you think, process and evaluate reasons.

Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of business?
      - Jeremy brings up a good point when referencing the change in the dimensions as it move into smaller to larger companies and levels of the ladder. I will have to agree that even the most moral individuals can have unethical practices based on other-dependents.

Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives?
-How can you not have an appreciation of doing the right thing? Its important to me to follow good ethical standards both in my daily life on a personal and professional basis.

Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course?
      - I feel that I have allowed myself to think deeper on the class topics, express more openly on my opinion and find examples on my conclusions

  6. What have you learned in this course that surprised you?

    - I think I'm more surprised by everyone's analysis of our case study's. We have been in many classes with one another but between this class and leadership I feel that we have gotten to know more about one another's personalities in regards to making business decisions. I joke around about this with my wife all the time by saying that I think we should all go into business with one another and start making money. That would be a good story to tell plus we all bring different experiences to the table. The one thing that surprised me the most was utilitarianism. The reason I say that is because I just feel that everyone is out for themselves in today's world including me personally. Now does that mean that I wouldn't help someone in need, no! But at the end of the day I look at everything as a potential business opportunity. Everyone that you come across you should introduce yourself to because that person is in the market for something and if you don't have access to help them then find a way. That would be my point by saying that I look out for myself and my family by trying to increase dollar per client or potential client.

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?

    - I think I would! Only because I like hearing how other people view things. Believe it or not there should be an app built for phones that answer questions morally for you. If you get put into a situation where you need to make a good or bad decision it could be put into your phone and a tree of answers could be provided to you letting you know what's right or wrong about the situation and who it will effect. A good friend of mine owns a company called Batteri that does something similar to this on a group basis. With his software you can load content, images, flow charts and more then everyone in the group or on the team receives the update and critics the product or service you're trying to launch. If someone were to load something that was unethical then the group would tell you how that may effect the others on the team had you come out with that product or service. It basically creates what's referred to in the software world as "stacks".

Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of business?

    - Absolutely! I look at ethics and moral values completely different now, however at the end of the day I'm going to continue what I've been doing. I love building networks and helping people through their endeavors. Do I always have the answer, heck no but I will find someone who does then try to build a solution for that persons. Now I can look at that differently as far as my viewpoints from how it would effect others.

Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives?

    - I believe that as a sales person or a business person you're faced with ethical decisions all the time. This class has made me think back to the people I've worked for and how unethical they are with how they conducted business.

Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course?

    - I would say that I was already pretty knowledgeable in written and oral communication. I actually think there are ways to improve this course through software that is already available. We used blogs which could be great but sometimes not the cleanest whereas we could have used something like evernote and saved the information under the post which would allowed everyone to stay on track much more efficiently. In regards to improving my skills for analysis and critique, yes I think that I got much better at that.

  7. What have you learned in this course that surprised you?
What surprised me most was finding out about how the people in our class viewed different situations and the base morals they had. It was interesting to see so many different approaches and ideas about the same topic. I knew going in a lot about their backgrounds but not a lot about their thought processes.

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
I would defiantly take another philosophy class. Without time as a barrier these is so much to the subject it would be enlightening to learn more and get more into the non business side as well. I would be interested in metaphysics.

Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of business?
I understand how these base ideas can be applied to the business world and the importance of having a philosophical approach to some areas of business.

Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives?
I feel I have always had this base instinct. I enjoy questioning people and the whys to what they are doing. I just grew accustom to these kinds of questions growing up.

Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course?
Now that I know the theories behind all the talk and can see who people are approaching different topics and conversations I feel I am better equipped to effective communicate with them and have an understanding of the position they are coming from.

  8. What have you learned in this course that surprised you?
That though I like to debate and play out each side to see where it goes, I am pretty set in my beliefs and I am comfortable with them. I also learned to "never say never," until you are faced with that situation, because you don't know how you will react. I learned that I fall in between Kant in Aristotle in my views and care very little for the utilitarian views.

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
Possibly, once I am out of school and it is for fun or debate rather than my degree. I have to take at least 2 hours of ethics for my continuing education for my insurance license every two years, and it's on the continuing education exam for my series 6, so it's not like ethics isn't a part of my continuing education, but if I were to take it again it would be more for fun rather than a grade.

Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of business?
I believe so. I came into this class pretty confident in the right and wrong in business. I did have a revelation. I realized that even though I have pretty high standards when it comes to my work and that lying is wrong, I do lie in certain situations to make sure that I keep the peace or keep my job. I lie when I tell someone they are not bothering me, or that I can take on extra work without it really bothering me. I kind of realized this when I was working yet another Saturday without help from anyone.

Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of ethical questions in our daily lives?
I think I have always had them. My mother raised me with the Golden Rule and the Thumper Rule, but only the first one really took hold. While I enjoyed this class it was more interesting to hear about where my values came from, in terms of philosophers.

Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course?
I don't know, it's not like I wasn't outspoken to begin with, it's more that you gave me a forum for opinion / values rather than a "fact based" discussion. It was nice to be able to look at a situation from all angles rather than just regurgitate what a book said.
